welcome to the
monster district!
the year is 2053, and the world is not the same as it was in 2012. the summer of that year has gone down in history as the summer of discovery, when humans realized that they weren't quite as alone on their planet as they thought they were. vampires, werewolves, fairies, sirens - they were only the beginning. creatures long thought to be just tales of myth slowly revealed themselves to be all too real. its been fifty years since the reveal, but it's still strange to remember that the waiter of your favorite restaurant is a vampire, that the owner of grocery store down the street is a selkie, that the pretty girl down the street has dragons in her family tree.

its by no means a peaceful world, and not all humans are accepting of the change. it seemed almost natural for the "monsters" to come together and pull away from the humans who wanted them gone. and so the "monster district" in seoul came to be, the biggest population of supernatural creatures in the world. roughly located in the area where the infamous miari used to be, the monster district has come to be heaven and hell, haven and tourist attraction. while home for the ones that live there, it's become a bit of a joke for the humans. "i bet you couldn't last a night in the monster district!" "i dare you to go to the monster club!" if you want to graduate high school, you have to talk to a monster in the monster district!"

but for better or for worse, it's home.

( an alternate universe rpg with elements taken from the anita blake series )
2012 -- the Big Reveal (June 21). It starts with a vampire in Brazil. He's sick and tired of having to hide and he lets the world know it. Its kind of chaotic after that.

2014 -- The first batch of synthetic blood is released. This is when the vampires start to gather into two sides: the ones that welcome the chance to become more "normal" and the ones that chafe at having to suppress their true natures.

2015 -- The year that breaks the fragile peace. A werewolf pup in France is killed during recess (February 16th) when he transforms accidentally and a teacher panics. Monsters demand a right to live.

2016 -- Man countries begin to pass their own legislature to protect humans from monsters. While every country's laws differ, one thing is certain: humans are protected from monsters, but monsters aren't protected from humans.

2021 -- Asia, by some strange turn, has slowly become a haven for monsters. Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines are especially welcoming.

2022 -- Sunset at Karachi (October 30)becomes the defining moment of the year. The biggest clan of weregoats in the world, known to be a peaceful faction that kept to themselves, are murdered by a group of human extremists. Living in the clan's midst are four Fey and a jinn. In all, eighty-six are killed. For the next three years, no one is safe. Humans are murdered in retaliation in all parts of the world (8 in Seattle - November 6, 10 in Yorkshire - November 18, 7 in Manila - December 4), monsters are killed in kind (4 werevolves in New York - November 3, 2 vampires in Tulsa - November 20, 1 siren in Sassari - November 26, 2 animators - December 1).

2025 -- The Second Dark comes to an end when councils of monsters come together ( January 23-27). They come together in every continent, made up of the oldest vampires, the biggest were clans, the strongest of the Old (*). The councils are loosely formed organizations. There aren't really any structure to them, but most of the monsters that want quiet lives follow their directions.

2028 -- Synthetic blood is finally perfected. Daylight Corporation is now the leader in the product, named Synth. The blood is relatively simple to make, but the demand is unexpected. Vampires, and other creatures that need blood to survive, come to get their blood in nearly-uncontrollable crowds.

2029 -- The Pure come into formation in reaction to Synth becomes mainstream. They're a world-wide group of humans dedicated to driving the monsters back and keeping them separated from the human world. Their goals include depriving monsters of the few tentative rights and benefits they've acquired, giving humans more leeway in killing monsters they consider "harmful," keeping monsters unemployed, et cetera. They hold their first conference, which becomes an annual event (May 9), to discuss laws they want to bring forward into the world.

2034 -- An attack to a San Antonio clan of wererats (September 9) are believed to have been organized by the Pure. There isn't enough legal evidence to try them, but they have now sealed their place as number one enemies to the monsters.

2036 -- A small group of monsters come together to help save three missing children in Athens (July 6-10). A clairvoyant, a werelynx, a centaur, and a succubus find the children before the police even have time to find suspects. It's a defining moment that helps turn the public favor towards monsters.

2038 -- Greece becomes the first country to allow monsters to become citizens. This means that any peaceful monster that registers with the government is protected under the same laws as the rest of the human citizens. A small district court house is bombed, killing two humans and one monster (May 13). The Pure are blamed. The Grecian government is the first to label the group as "terrorists."

2039 -- Germany, England, Finland, Italy, Brazil, Chile, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, and South Korea follow in Greece's footsteps and allow citizenship for monsters. Small attacks occur in reach country in reaction, also attributed to the pure.

2041 -- The rest of the European countries allow citizenship for their monsters, except for France. Several states in the United States (California, North Dakota, South Dakota, Arizona, Florida, and Rhode Island) pass bills that are referred to as the Cause and Effect bills, that protect monsters from being fired from a workplace without cause and prevent the murdering of monsters. In South Korea, Miari is casually dubbed as the Monster District. It's the second largest population of monsters in the world, the first being Athens.

2042 -- South Korea allows citizenship for monsters. The Pure attack Bigs in the Monster District (March 10); no one is killed but the werewolves are angry. That cell of the Pure is attacked (March 12) and three humans are injured.

2043 -- The United States approves citizenship for monsters. Senator Harvey Wycliff comes out to the public and reveals that he's a weretiger. There is, understandably, public outcry, but there's no basis to the demands that he step down from office. He becomes a central figure in paving the road for better human/monster relations.

2044 -- A public school in Korea becomes the first to openly accept monster students and punish those that bully those students (February). The protest is surprisingly hostile, but the school stands by its stance. Two new schools are opened in reaction, expressly to welcome monster students, or students from monster families.

2047 -- Several more schools around the world have followed in Korea's stead. A school in Ohio is attacked, killing three human students and four monster students (October 1)). The attack is linked to the Pure.

2050 -- The Monster District has flourished, beating Athens out for the highest population of monsters by mileage.

2052 -- Daylight Corporation announces the development of new synthetic products to help assist monsters live more peacefully (January 4). Public reaction is mixed; "how can you recreate life essence?" people ask, of the monsters that don't feed on blood or flesh, but something more unexplainable. Despite the reaction, Daylight Corporation stands firm by its announcement and says the first prototypes will be available by 2060.

2053 -- In South Korea, the newest elected Vice President is a wererabbit. No one expects Kim Myungsuk to win, but he does. The Pure light up the governmental airwaves with threats of attacks if the Vice President isn't impeached; the Monster District throws a week-long celebration.
